DON McARA-
Born in Wellington in 1937, Don has been painting full time since 1987 and is known primarily as a representational landscape artist, painting en plein air and in the studio.
Many of his exhibitions have featured material gathered in the Greek Islands, Italy, France, Britain, Portugal and Spain. He enjoys equally the many aspects of the South Island landscape of New Zealand.
In the 1960’s he exhibited abstract low relief textural works in mixed media.
He also explores imaginative painting based on myths and world events.
Sometimes he incorporates clearly attributed references to the art of previous centuries in his pieces. His work is to be found in many private collections within and beyond New Zealand.
Don has won various local awards in Canterbury and Otago.
A retired educationist, his other interests include his family, gardening, and restoring old tramcars.
He has written and illustrated "Hold Very Tight Please! The Cable Cars of New Zealand" 2007, Grantham House.
